Babywearing: Five Reasons To Wear That Baby!
Babywearing…
will probably always be my fondest memory
of those early years with each of my babies.
As a birth and newborn photographer in the Roanoke Valley, I have chatted with many families interested in learning more about how to wear their baby! I’m excited to share with you just a few of my favorite reasons to wear your baby!
Here are 5 reasons we love babywearing!
1. Babywearing keeps your baby…your baby.
When out and about, people are much less likely to reach in and touch your baby or ask to hold them when they’re snuggled up close to you! Especially in germy seasons…babywearing is the perfect way to keep out of the house without worrying about who will spread germs directly to your baby!
2. Babywearing is good for bonding with your baby.
Sometimes births can be traumatic. Breastfeeding can start along a bumpy road. Postpartum mental health struggles may stir up feelings you weren’t anticipating. Your baby ended up in the NICU for a period. Many reasons can cause for that fourth trimester to less smooth than you anticipated. Babywearing physically changes both the parent and the child’s body. Studies have shown that skin to skin allows to better regulate the baby’s temperature and heart rate, increase brain responses, stimulates digestion, and calms both parent and child. In addition, literally smelling your baby increases feel good hormones!
3. Babywearing lets you keep living life!
Most families I met learned the benefits of babywearing after their second child arrived. When you have a little one at home and then a new baby, you learn that the little one doesn’t let life stop just because of their new sibling! Babywearing keeps you hands on with everyone who needs you! Plus, babywearing keeps the adventures rolling! Wear your little one while enjoying a hike, shopping, or even let them snooze while you have a ladies night out!
4. Babywearing lets you nurse out and about!
With my first, I would hide in the car or the back room (or not even leave the house!) when I had a little nursling. It really led to a lonely first few months! It wasn’t until my second that I learned you could wear your baby and nurse discreetly! It takes practice, but you can wear your little one in a wrap, ring sling, or even some buckle carriers and nurse away! I’ve even nursed while shopping without a single person knowing!
5. Babywearing saves your sanity (and your baby’s)!
Sometimes babywearing is sweet and special and even makes you want to cry because you never want it to stop (yes, okay, I did that!). But sometimes…life is hard. The toddler is flopping around the floor because you cracked their chip. The newborn is screaming because reflux is hurting their tummy. The 7 month old is teething something fierce and the frozen rag just isn’t doing the trick anymore. The 9 month old is doing his first nap strike and you can’t even remember what month it is.
Hello, babywearing. In my experience, and hundreds of moms I’ve spoken with, sometimes just getting that baby connected to you, doing the sweet baby dance and singing…and everyone has a chance to relax and reconnect. I couldn’t even count the amount of times everyone started in tears but ended in cuddles.
